Every month The Feather highlights one individual from the student body who demonstrates exemplary character and or admirable dedication to classes or extracurricular activities. Teachers choose those who display the before mentioned characteristics in the classroom setting. The objective of the following article is to honor the effort of students to live by Caleb Code Standards: Seek Truth, Speak Life, Serve Others.

The current student of the month article features Riley Goldsborough.

Martin McCann, ’22, or Owen, as his peers call him, gained recognition from his English teacher, Kyle Dodson. Dodson appreciates students that get involved and discuss what they learn in class. McCann earned the Student of the Month title for September because Dodson noticed the qualities of a hard working student.

“In all students I look for a certain level of engagement and willingness to interact within the classroom and with one another,” Dodson said. “I always appreciate students who have an active desire in showing effort. Owen displays several of these qualities, showing that he has a desire to improve upon what he already knows. He is an intelligent student and yet he is still looking for ways to better himself.”

McCann has attended FCS since first grade. As a freshman, he enjoys English above all academic classes. McCann admires Dodson’s teaching methods and his personality while teaching. However, including electives, he enjoys participating in the choir. McCann enjoys singing and working to improve his vocals with the choir director, Susan Ainley.

“My favorite class would have to be choir, just because Mrs. Ainley is a great teacher and I really enjoy singing for her,” McCann said. “My favorite academic class is probably English. Mr. Dodson is really fun and I love his personality and his way of teaching.”

McCann entertains ideas about his future. He plans to go to college and continue in his father’s career path, financial advising. Though interested in a career, McCann enjoys high school and chooses not to worry about getting a job this early in his life.

McCann has a relatively small family. His mother, Lorrie, and his father, also named Martin, support him in his academics. Both of McCann’s parents believe that Dodson’s reasons for choosing him are accurate. Witnessing this exemplary behavior at home, Martin and Lorrie McCann share the quality character they see in their son.    

“From a very young age Owen has always expressed the desire to learn and understand,” Martin said. “He has a strong desire to do well and loves to be prepared and think ahead. Owen has always been a people person and we have learned over the years that he thrives when placed in small groups. People tend to gravitate towards him and he is usually the center of attention but not in an attention-getting way, more of a caring and sincere way so people are drawn to him.”

Over the years, McCann made many friends on campus. One of those friends, Kamdon Marquez, ’22, stated that they share interests over some of the same subjects. Some of these subjects include video games, sports, and Youtube. Marquez believes that these common interests are a big factor why he and McCann are such close friends.

“Some of my closest friends are Kamdon Marquez and Greg Tanaka,” McCann said. “Both of them were here in kindergarten, so I knew them when I first came. All of us like to hang out both on and off campus.”

In his free time, McCann likes to play Xbox and football. His favorite animal is a hippo because they are able to run underwater. His favorite genre of music consists of mostly 80’s rock, with Foreigner as his favorite band.
