Varsity boys basketball ends the night with a victory, defeating the Coalinga Horned Toads, 83-81, in double overtime, Dec. 4.

Sophomore Bryson Graham sends the team into the first over time, hitting the game tying three point shot.

The team of 11, lead by head coach Jon Penberthy and assistant coach Mike Neal, fought back after trailing, 36-33, at half time, ultimately defeating Coalinga. Varsity boys basketball’s overall record is currently 1-1.

Senior team captain Suky Cheema focused only on the main goal, to win, as the team fought through two rounds of overtime.

“The only thing that was running through my mind was, we have to win,” Cheema said. “We lost our last game to a team we knew we could beat and we couldn’t let this one slip away. I had fouled out in the first overtime so all i could do was watch and support my teammates. I’m proud of my boys and I’m happy we got the win! Even if it took two overtimes. I think we focused in on our game plan and played to our strengths. Coach Penberthy and Coach Mike Neal had a good game plan and we knew we had to execute it to come out with the win.”

The team has their eyes on the prize, hoping to go all the way to Selland Arena and win a Valley Championship.

Cheema shares his favorite moment from the game, watching teammate Graham score the three point shot that sent the team into overtime, and the excitement of the moment.

“The most exciting thing for me was probably when Bryson Graham (sophomore) hit the game tying three to send it into the first overtime,” Cheema said. “It was definitely a crazy moments. I was having flashbacks to my buzzer beater last year at Minarets. The student section always helps, especially when they come to support you and bring all that extra energy into the gym. It always helps to have my friends and family in the stand cheering me on.”

Cheema and fellow senior, Brandon Brogan, lead the team as captains.

JV next plays in the CVC tournament, location TBD, and time TBD, Dec. 5-7. Varsity next faces Yosemite HS at home, at 6 p.m., Dec. 6. Head and cheer on your JV and varsity Eagles!
