To support the Valley tradition in raising money for Valley Children’s Healthcare, the 32 annual Kids Day takes place, March 5.

Joining in on the action, FC leadership students, Feather staff and even other FC students who want to help, stand on street corners selling the special edition newspapers made by The Fresno Bee for $1. They claim the street corners of Alluvial/Maple and Alluvial/Cedar starting at 4:30 a.m. with ASB coming at 3:30 a.m. despite the rainy forecast.

Along with FC, around 8,000 others around the Valley volunteer to sell newspapers.

In 1988, ABC 30 News, The Fresno Bee and Valley Children’s join together, creating a way for communities all over the valley a chance to support the hospital. Since then, The Bee highlights special features: hospital patients and the hosptial itself in their newspaper to boost awareness of how to donate. Over the years, the fundraiser has been able to raise over $9 million dollars.

Due to the children’s hospital being a not-for-profit, Kids Day serves as an opportunity to raise funds which helps pay for uncompensated care.

After the usual wrap up of Kids Day for FC students at 8 a.m., a group of Feather journalists travel to street corners Blackstone and Shaw to interview Veteran Executive Editor of The Fresno Bee Jim Boren, Fresno city councilman Steven Brandau, Julie Tymn from ABC30 and journalist Aurora Diaz along with Valley Children’s executive director foundation Adam M. Van Dusen. The interviews revolve around the impact and importance Kids Day is to the community and hospital.

FC Eagle mascot, Fierce, also helps out at the Kids Day media hub by selling newspapers.

This year a total of $2,181.29 was raised by FC students, falling short from last year’s number of $2,500.
