Current baseball players look to overtake school records

As the diamond gets prepared, the baseball team gears up as their season heads into full swing. Switching from the West Sequoia League into the East Sierra League, the team prepares to compete for the Valley championship title.

The baseball team began their season with 15 players, consisting of six freshmen, one sophomore and eight seniors. After losing three seniors last season, the team fills their spots and practices their new positions to get ready for league.

New member of the team, Sam Swearengin, ’22, talks about his favorite thing about playing baseball at Fresno Christian and how he hopes to grow seeing that he is only a freshman.

“I am definitely looking forward to going to playoffs and hopefully winning rings,” Swearingin said. “My favorite thing about playing at Fresno Christian is probably just being with my teammates. We have a lot of fun in the dugout and on the field and it makes then game a lot better when you have that relationship with your team. I think experience and playing ball year-round and doing tournaments in the summer against really good competition will for sure help me up my game.”

The team is coached by head coach Noah Heinz, assisted by Max Wyatt and alumnus Roman Endicott, ’18. Approaching his ninth year of coaching, Heinz hopes to coach another Valley championship after winning the first ever baseball Valley championship for Fresno Christian in 2017.

With the benefit of coaching since 2011, Heinz coached some of the players that hold the current baseball sports records. Since the baseball season is still in play, the statistics for this season were not entered in the running for the overall records.

In the following podcast, Noah Heinz talks about his favorite thing about coaching baseball and what he remembers about the players who hold the baseball records.

Even though none of the current player’s stats were eligible for the records, Heinz believes that senior, Griffin Schmidt, will surpass one of the records. Knowing that his coach thinks he will break a record this season, Schmidt explains how he feels about his coach’s belief in him and what he intends to do to break a record.

“I think that it shows that coach Heinz has a lot of confidence in me to have a great season,” Schmidt said. “I am going to put a lot of work and try to become the best baseball player I can be this year. My favorite part about playing baseball at FCS is being able to play baseball with the boys I grew up going to school with.”
