Seniors and editor-in-chiefs (left to right) Alex Rurik, Kamryn Schultz and Sam Cross represent The Feather as they receive 10th place Best of Show award for the 2019 JEA/NSPA Spring Journalism conference trip, April 27.

Feather staffers and advisers teach seven sessions during the two days of conference. Rurik, Cross and Schultz teach ‘From the Top Down’ along with adviser Greg Stobbe. Cross and senior editor Addison Schultz, ’21, covered the session, ‘Impact with Infographics’.

‘Image as Your Hook’ was a session taught by photojournalist editors Kaylie Clem, ’19, and Julia Fikse, ’19, with their adviser Kori Friesen. Here, the importance of choosing an image as a hook to draw in viewers will be discussed. The second session the photo editors plan to cover will be ‘Enhance with the ‘gram (Instagram)’. The power of visual news and tricks to creating a professional page on social media creates a foundation for an online newspaper.

Video editors Braden Bell, ’20, Blake Deffenbacher, ’20, and Friesen teach tips to creating ‘Quality and Quantity with Style’ in videos. ‘Tweet it Up: Twitter as a Major Tool’ covers how to create compelling tweets that engage viewers and connect them to the main website. This one was taught by Bell, Logan Lewis, ’20, and Stobbe.

A new session taught by Friesen and Stobbe directs towards advisers only. An open discussion on ‘Elements of an Award-Winning Team: Feather advisers Open Up’.

Throughout the conference, Feather staffers sport their new gear from @archerandhound for the JEA/NSPA conference. The bags include a personalized notebook, pen, lanyard and water bottle. Thank you to Archer and Hound for the swag bags!

Thank you all for staying up to date and engaging with us throughout the trip!
