Students discuss Baltimore Ravens’ win in season opener
With week one of the 2019 NFL season starting this past weekend, Kyle Clem sat down to talk with juniors Carston Saelzler and Bryson Graham about Sunday’s game, Sept. 9.
The weekend’s headlines spotlighted the rising drama surrounding Antonio Brown’s impromptu release from the Oakland Raiders at his request. Following the release, the New England Patriots took a chance on Brown and signed him to a one year contract worth up to $15 million with a $9 million signing bonus, Sept. 7.
Following the Saturday headlines, the NFL kicked off its 100th season. The day featured many high scoring games and a rarely seen tie. However, one game’s score stood out among the rest.
The Baltimore Ravens faced the Miami Dolphins to begin the year, with Baltimore showcasing their offense in full force with the NFL’s first ever final score of 59-10. In this contest, Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson recorded the best game of his young career, passing for 324 yards and five TDs in three quarters. A majority of those yards came through rookie wide receiver Marquise Brown, who hauled in four catches for 147 yards and two TDs. The defense performed big in the game as well, recording three sacks, 12 quarterback hits and two interceptions.
A few players produced better than expected and provided major points for fantasy owners. The highest scoring player of the week, Sammy Watkins, scored 47 fantasy points. Another breakout player was running back Austin Ekeler of the Los Angeles Chargers. Ekeler scored 39 points on 154 total yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver John Ross III showed out this week, putting up 35 points on 158 yards and two touchdowns.
Stay tuned to The Feather next week for a review of week two of the NFL season.
