Cheer challenges sport stereotype

Dear editor:

As a cheerleader, I am constantly barraged with comments of cheer not being a sport. The Webster Dictionary defines a ìsport as an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.î

Cheerleading involves coordination, strength, agility, flexibility, and practice. These are the same skills required of other athletes. I have actively participated in school sports, such as basketball, volleyball and tennis. While each of these undoubtedly require physical endurance, strength and skill, I believe cheerleading is just as challenging.

Like other athletes, cheerleaders are also required to condition their bodies for their sport. Daily practices consist of conditioning for endurance, running, and strengthening and flexibility exercises. The sport runs all year long and requires a tremendous dedication. Practices are an ongoing commitment, continuing throughout the summer and into the new year.

It is argued that cheerleaders are merely ìperformingî at school sports functions. While this is true we are there to support our sports teams, we also compete in numerous competitions throughout the year.

I invite you to join us at one of our competitions and watch our sport in action. After all, seeing is believing.
