COVID sports update

As COVID-19 persists, sports seasons are not being held back from playing. Fresno Christian students are one of the few schools able to meet in person. The California Department of Public Health announced a plan for California sports to slowly start up again.

FC sports are opening back up again, which include, cross country, tennis, golf, soccer and football. Each sport has new rules and regulations which make the seasons modified. These modifications consist of social distancing and outside practices.

Junior Ainsley Thompson shares how COVID has affected different sports.

“Basketball is tough to practice because we have to stay socially distanced, we can not practice our regular offense or defense which is pretty much the whole game, ” Thompson says. “Softball, however, is pretty much regular practice because we are outside.”

Thompson has been a part of the FC softball team for 5 years playing outfield and second base. Although Thompson has been committed to these sports for years, she does not plan on pursuing them through college.

“I feel that sports get more intense in college and I just enjoy being a part of the team and having fun!”

Despite these restrictions, Fresno Christian is one of the few schools that are fortunate enough to be back in school and practices and students are not taking it for granted.

“I am very grateful for the connections I get to have with people  who I normally don’t talk to during school.” Thompson continues. “It’s a fun, stress-free time for the whole team.”

Silas Emerian, ‘23, a four-year tennis player at Fresno Christian, shares how his tennis team bonds during practices in a pandemic.

“I enjoy the friendship and conversations I have during practices,” Emerian says. “ I think the team is a bit held back because we were out of practice for a long time, but we all have a really good time together.”

Sports game schedules are expected to start back up in the next couple of weeks, beginning of March.
