Fresno Christian varsity cheerleaders win first place in Div. II cheer at the CIF Invitational at Buchanan high school, Dec. 4. The eagles competed against Clovis West and Clovis North in the competition and were surprised to win against such talented squads.
Practice for this comp routine began in the summer months as cheerleaders had regular early morning practices. This team will travel to Florida after Christmas to fulfill the national bid that the squad from ’19-20 never got to do because of the COVID pandemic.
One week before the Invitational the routine underwent adjustments as one member wold not be able to participate. This created an extra challenge for the team. Not only was this the first competition in two years, but the routine had brand new alterations.
Coach Hope Villines who took over the cheer program in the fall of 2015 shares her thoughts on the competition.
“Going into the competition, I knew that Fresno Christian was going to do really well,” Villines said. “When they took the mat, they exceeded my expectations and I think they definitely exceeded their own expectations.”
This local competition served as a warm-up for nationals and they were ready for whatever the result would have been.
“I was so proud of them and I didn’t care what place we got because I was so proud of their performance,” Villines said. “I knew that they had hit a solid routine. When they were announcing the winners, I was ecstatic and shocked and so happy, I think I felt every emotion in fifteen seconds.”
