Track and field season begins

Track+and+field+season+begins

After a year with limited athletes, Track and Field now consists of a larger team, with more athletes joining now that winter sports are closing. Even though track is an individual competition, a large team is needed for team placements.

The first informational meeting was held for the 2022 season for anyone who was interested, Jan 21. The Young’s shared plans and expectations for the season. They have been coaching since 2002. In 2019 they instructed the Middle School track team and last year decided to step up to High School.

Track and Field has greatly impacted both of the Young’s. With an accomplished past, Dorina Gilmore-Young shares her passion for the sport.

“I was a Track & Field athlete in high school. My specialty was 300-meter hurdles and the 400 meters. I also did relays and long jump,” Dorina Gilmore-Young said. “I was a soccer player originally, but my coach invited me to run track to stay in shape, and I fell in love with it. I love coaching track because it is an opportunity to mentor and disciple students and journey with them to run, jump, and throw for Jesus.”

Shawn Young expresses what he wants to accomplish this upcoming track season.

“I want to see each team member challenge themselves and improve,” Shawn Young said. “I want each athlete to learn that they can do more than they think. Not every athlete will win gold medals, but each one can aim to maximize the talent that God has given them.”

Track season begins with only a few students as the winter sport season concludes.

Zoe Bull is one athlete in particular Coaches Dorina Gilmore-Young and Shawn Young are keeping their eye on. Bull started playing in track 5 years and it has been her favorite sport since.

“Last year I broke the school girls long jumping record with a jump of 16’2,” Bull said, “I used to do triple jump as well but decided to try high jump on a whim last year, and ended up tying the girls high jump record with a jump of 4’10. This year I hope to break 17 feet in long jump and to get into the 5 foot range for high jump.”

If you’re interested in joining track, email Dorina and Shawn Young.
