Home Economics students grow their culinary abilities with a multi-step process of making homemade peach jam. Prepping and freezing peaches was the lesson of the day, Sept. 7. Lead by teacher Kimberly Bell, she believes learning this life skills will aid them in the real world.
Peach jam processing steps
Step 1:Rinse in water & score peaches by cutting an X into the bottom not to deep.
Step 2:Blanch peaches using a spoon lower peaches into boiling water one at a time depending on the firmness of the peach leave them in there 1-2 minutes.
Step 3: Using a spoon remove them from the pot of water then place immediately into a bowl of ice cold water let rest in water for about 1 minute.
Step 4: Remove from cold water then using fingers or small knife begin to peal skin from the cuts made in step one
Step 5:Dip peaches into acidified water.
Step 6:Slice peach from end to end letting your knife run along the exterior of the pit. gently twist the halves apart to remove the pit.
Step 7: Cut each peach into 6-8 slices.
Step 8: Stir 3 tablespoons of lemon juice for 8-10 peaches plus 1/2 a tea spoon of sugar for each peach. Mix until coated.
Step 9: Spoon into gallon ziplock bags removing as much air as possible. Place into freezer when completed.
The next part of making peach jam will take place later in the semester when students complete the jarring process.
