Mittermeier, “Mitty”, was born and grew up in Mexico where she graduated from the ITESM University with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences and later attended Corcoran College in Washington D.C. where she joined the Fine Art Photography program.
Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen, her husband, have a mission to protect the world’s oceans and document not only the water but also the indigenous lives who depend on it.
Cristina Mittermeier’s work has been recognized in hundreds of magazines including National Geographic and TIME. Along with her partner, Paul Nicklen, she won the title “National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year of 2018,” and in 2021, she was featured in Welcome to Earth on Disney+.
In 2014, Mittermeier and Nicklen co-founded SeaLegacy using their many talents. Over the years, their non-profit is achieving their mission, along with helping over 100 conservation corporations tell “the right story.”
Currently, she resides on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada with her three adult children, John, Michael and Julianna, all of whom share her interest in nature.
