Kicking off November, the girls varsity basketball team takes on the new season, consisting of four new freshmen, one sophomore and three juniors. Team captains this year are juniors Devyn Wilkson, Marisol Martinez and sophomore Sarah Guglielmana. Joining the coaching staff this year is head coach, Chris Mitchell. Also joining him will be assistant coach Kylie Maya who plays on the Fresno City College women’s basketball team.
With only eight players on the team, a new head coach, and no senior teammates, the team dynamic will be different this year.
Captain Marisol Martinez takes on the role as the team leader this year and touches on the obstacles this new year faces.
“As a team we’ve had many big changes throughout this season, and through everything as a team, we’ve had to stick together and have each others back,” Martinez said. “And through all of this we’ve have had to put out full faith in God and his plan even though it might not be going the way we planned.”
With this year’s team being very small, over half of the roster will be filled with new freshmen. Anna Pascual, ‘27, talks about what it is like being a freshman on the Varsity team and how it can be intimidating to compete against girls who are older than her.
“It’s definitely intimidating but I’ve also grown a lot because of it,” Pascual said, “The fear I’ve had has decreased so much.”
