To promote unity between campuses, the hosting Liberty Hawks proposed a wedding theme for the year at the first West Sierra League (WSL) meeting on Sept. 10. Selected students among the Division five schools attend meetings that vary in creativity and location.
“The wedding theme is like a new start,” junior Kevin Damm, vice president, said. “It represents unity and learning to come together and work to better our schools.”
The gatherings provide leadership with chances to interact with students from other schools.
“I think it is a good opportunity to see how other schools operate and for them to see how we operate,” Sophia Cook, ’10, said. “It is interesting meeting new people and to hear what they think of our school.”
At the WSL meeting, leadership classes discussed school events such as the annual talent show each spring.
“The WSL meeting is when all of the Leadership classes come together and discuss problems in schools and how to resolve them,” Damm said. “We can also get ideas from other schools by how they put events on at their school.”
Last year the campus’ leadership class led the meetings; Liberty hosts this year with assorted games and a provided breakfast and lunch at each meeting.
“Every year a school in our league volunteers to put on the WSL,” Josh Tosland, leadership advisor, said. “It allows us to collaborate with other schools on ideas for school activities.”
The next WSL meeting will discuss homecoming, the talent show and school spirit, held at Mendota on Oct. 29.
“Being a part of student leadership is a lot of work such as planning events and making sure they run smoothly,” Cook said. “On the other hand it is fun to see classmates participate in rallies and games we put on.”
