IRELAND MEETING PLANNED FOR MARCH 2
Those families who have already expressed an interest in traveling to Ireland in mid June are encouraged to attend a planning meeting with Greg Stobbe, English teacher at FCHS, March 2, from 7-8:15 p.m. in room 625. The meeting is open to anyone who is interested.
Stobbe has taken nearly 300 people to Europe over the last 14 years on 12 different trips and is planning a 14-16 day educational Ireland trip that may be taken for high school or university credit. FEATHER WINS TOP ONLINE AWARD
For the first time in campus history, The Feather Online has won the top award given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) sponsored by Columbia University in New York City, Feb. 26. Online high school newspapers from across the United States who produced a 2008 fall semester edition were eligible for judging in the 2009 Crown Awards Program.
A CSPA Crown is the recognition given to high school and collegiate newspapers published in America. Seven high school newspapers are finalists in this year’s online competition and will win either a Gold or Silver Crown. All high schools in the United States, regardless of size or division, are elibigble to compete for a Crown.
Scholastic Crown Award finalists will be presented with either a Gold or Silver Crown Award during CSPA’s 85th Annual Convention, held from March 18-20, 2009, at Columbia University. The Feather editors are Chelsea Joy, Suzanna Quiring, Austin Ward, Spencer Lee, Andrew Rurik and Elizabeth Grossman.
The Feather Online has won many awards from CSPA over the last decade but never been nominated for their top award. Greg Stobbe has advised The Feather for 12 years and is scheduled to be one of the speakers at the conference in March.
The Feather Online is also currently in a second national newspaper competition. The National Scholastic Press Association is judging The Feather Online along with newspapers across America. The Feather has won an Online Pacemaker two of the last three years in this event, being a finalist in 2007. A Pacemaker is the high school equivalent of a Pultizer Prize. The Pacemaker finalists will be announced in early March.
MATH PRESENTATION
Math teacher Jane Gillespie will make a presentation today in Seattle as one of a few teachers in the nation involved in a new Texas Instruments calculator program. She will include a video of some of her students in the presentation. Gillespie is also scheduled to present in Washington, D.C. soon.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL WINS WSL
The girls’ basketball team went undefeated throughout the season and won the West Sequoia League with a record of 8-0. The team has a bye in the playoffs this week and will next host either Kings Christian or Central Valley Christian at 7 p.m., March 3.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The administration needs volunteers from the junior high and high school to help pass out auction brochures at Peoples Church on Sunday, Feb. 22. Volunteers will distribute the brochures for 30 minutes for the 8, 9:45 and 11:30 a.m. services. Please sign up in the high school office for one of the three services.
SELECTIVE SERVICE REGISTRATION
All 17- and 18-year-old guys should remember to register with the Selective Service System. Federal law requires all men living in the U.S. to register within a month of their 18th birthday. Registering keeps students eligible for college loans, job training, government jobs and driver’s license renewal in most states. Pick up a Selective Service registration card at a local post office or register online at www.sss.gov.

Congratulations to boys’ basketball coach Chris Schultz and track and field coach Ericlee Gilmore for their new babies!
Schultz’s wife, Jen, gave birth on Valentine’s Day to Samantha Quinn Schultz, weighing 7 lbs. and 7 oz. and 20 inches long. A picture of Sammie is posted on the high school office window.
Gilmore’s wife Dorina gave birth to Giada Esther Gilmore on Feb. 16, weighing 7 lbs. and 5 oz. and 21 inches long. Giada means “Jade” in Italian.
SADIE HAWKINS
Student leadership is planning a Western-themed Sadie Hawkins for Saturday, March 7. Tickets cost $35 and will go on sale on Feb. 18 through March 4. For more information, contact student leadership.
NOTS DVDS
The Night of the Stars DVDs will go on sale in the high school office around Feb. 11. The DVD will cost $10 and include the freshman, junior and senior movies.
CELL PHONE POLICY REMINDER
Cell phones are not to be seen in any of the buildings on campus between the hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., regardless of any reason. They will be taken away and kept by an administrator until after 3 p.m. However, students may use cell phones outside the building or in the high school office, with permission, during school hours.

Every Friday at lunch there is a Bible study for high schools boys in Room 623. Coach Sorenson will be there to lead the discussion. For more information, contact Sorenson.
