The Feather Online now features slideshows on several articles, including the following: Track and field sport shorts, How to: Make a ribbon, Cheer to perform at USA Spirit Nationals, Girls’ basketball sport shorts, 2009, Autorama rallies motor fans, Golf sport shorts, 2009 and Badminton proffers intramural challenge. More slideshows will be available in the coming weeks.
The Feather welcomes photographs from students, parents and other community members interested in Fresno Christian High activities. In the coming months, The Feather Online will also create a Media section to house all slideshows, videos and photographs.
BADMINTON INTRAMURALS
Badminton Intramurals will begin next Monday during lunch in the FC gym. Twenty-eight teams composed of two students each have signed up for the competition.
CHOIR WINS IN SAN DIEGO
For the first time in school history, high school chorale groups just returned from the Heritage Music Festival in San Diego and won the Sweepstakes award with the highest score of any choral group at the festival, March 20. They also won the Outstanding Choral Group award (ensemble) and the Adjudacators award. According to director Aaron Bryan, the choral groups won all the first place awards offered at the competition.
BAND PLACES SECOND IN SO-CAL
Fresno Christian Jazz Band placed second in their division this weekend at San Diego Heritage Music Festival, and both the Concert Band and the Jazz Band earned silver ratings for their performances. Congratulations!
The next performance by F.C. Jazz/Concert Bands will be Thursday, March 26, at C.M.E.A. at Washington Union High School. Students need to find their own rides to Easton.
Open to the general public will be the Friends of the Band concert on Friday, April 3, starting at 7 p.m. in Ground Zero.
ADVENTURE P.E.: KAYAKING
The next Adventure P.E. trip will feature kayaking at Pismo Beach on Wednesday, April 1. The excursion, originally planned for March 25, was postponed due to weather conditions. The trip will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students interested in must return a signed permission slip with $25 to Scott Callisch or to the high school office by Friday, March 27.
NSPA HONORS ‘THE TEEN AGE’
Junior Daniel Hopper was honored this week by the National Scholastic Press Association when his comic, “The Teen Age,” was placed on their Web site. The NSPA highlighted Daniel’s Feb. 26 comic on all of their Web pages, including the section which names The Feather Online as one NSPA’s 2009 Pacemaker finalists.
Hopper has drawn a comic strip for The Feather Online since he debuted The Teen Age, October 25, 2008. The NSPA, based in Minneapolis, MN, has been judging student publications since 1921 and online newspapers since 2001.
Those who have not kept up with the antics of the Teen Age’s main character, Jake, and his best friend Bradley, may want to read Jenn Boudreau and Hannah Joseph’s Oct. 29, 2008, article, “Illustrator debuts daily online comic strip.”
FRESHMEN DEBUT PODCAST
Brooke Stobbe and David Casuga, both freshmen, released the first episode of their podcast series, “Where the Brooke flows.” The segment is available on The Feather’s podcasting page, accessed from the right menu bar button above Daily News. Select “Where the Brooke flows” from the “Campus life” drop-down menu in the upper-right corner to listen to the episode. The podcast will also be available on iTunes next week.
GUARDS FINISH OFF EAGLES’ HISTORIC SEASON
The girls’ basketball team lost 66-59 to Bellarmine Jefferson High School in the second round of the CIF State playoffs, March 10. FC trailed by just 4 in the final quarter, but the Guards closed out the game to improve to 32-1 overall.
FC finished at 22-7 overall and 8-0 in the West Sequoia League. Congratulations Eagles on a great season!
IRELAND THIS SUMMER?
Those students and families who have already expressed an interest or still want to go must e-mail Greg Stobbe their intent to travel to Ireland this June by March 18. 14 FEATHER STAFFERS WIN INDIVIDUAL AWARDS AT FRESNO STATE
The Feather print staff participated in the San Joaquin Valley Scholastic Press Association’s annual conference and competition at Fresno State, March 7. 14 staff members won individual awards ranging from honorable mention to Spencer Lee’s first place in On-the-Spot sports writing. The Feather also received a Superior rating for the 2008-2009 first semester newspapers. Nearly 200 students and 22 high schools from Lodi to Bakersfield participated in the one-day competition.

The Bee congratulated the editors of The Feather Online staff for their Columbia Scholastic Press Association Crown award and for their nomination for a 4th straight Pacemaker honor from the National Scholastic Press Association. FEATHER WINS TOP ONLINE AWARD
For the first time in campus history, The Feather Online has won the top award given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) sponsored by Columbia University in New York City, Feb. 26. Online high school newspapers from across the United States who produced a 2008 fall semester edition were eligible for judging in the 2009 Crown Awards Program.
A CSPA Crown is the recognition given to high school and collegiate newspapers published in America. Seven high school newspapers are finalists in this year’s online competition and will win either a Gold or Silver Crown. All high schools in the United States, regardless of size or division, are elibigble to compete for a Crown.
Scholastic Crown Award finalists will be presented with either a Gold or Silver Crown Award during CSPA’s 85th Annual Convention, held from March 18-20, 2009, at Columbia University. The Feather editors are Chelsea Joy, Suzanna Quiring, Austin Ward, Spencer Lee, Brittany Stobbe, Andrew Rurik and Elizabeth Grossman.
The Feather Online has won many awards from CSPA over the last decade but never been nominated for their top award. Greg Stobbe has advised The Feather for 12 years and is scheduled to be one of the speakers at the conference in March.
The Feather Online is also currently in a second national newspaper competition. The National Scholastic Press Association named The Feather Online, along with 14 other newspapers across America, Pacemaker finalists, March 3. This is the fourth year in a row the campus paper has been awarded this honor. The NSPA will announce the winners during their annual spring convention, April 18.
A Pacemaker is the high school equivalent of a Pultizer Prize. The Pacemaker finalists will be announced in early March.
SELECTIVE SERVICE REGISTRATION
All 17- and 18-year-old guys should remember to register with the Selective Service System. Federal law requires all men living in the U.S. to register within a month of their 18th birthday. Registering keeps students eligible for college loans, job training, government jobs and driver’s license renewal in most states. Pick up a Selective Service registration card at a local post office or register online at www.sss.gov.

Congratulations to boys’ basketball coach Chris Schultz and track and field coach Ericlee Gilmore for their new babies!
Schultz’s wife, Jen, gave birth on Valentine’s Day to Samantha Quinn Schultz, weighing 7 lbs. and 7 oz. and 20 inches long. A picture of Sammie is posted on the high school office window.
Gilmore’s wife Dorina gave birth to Giada Esther Gilmore on Feb. 16, weighing 7 lbs. and 5 oz. and 21 inches long. Giada means “Jade” in Italian.
CELL PHONE POLICY REMINDER
Cell phones are not to be seen in any of the buildings on campus between the hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., regardless of any reason. They will be taken away and kept by an administrator until after 3 p.m. However, students may use cell phones outside the building or in the high school office, with permission, during school hours.
HS BOYS’ BIBLE STUDY
