During FC Band’s last halftime performance, Senior Bella Barrett hands down the position of drum major to Junior Chara Jacobs, Oct. 24.
As a key role in a marching band, the Drum Major leads the band while marching, using a special baton called a mace to keep time with the music. When competing, they use the mace to impress adjudicators with mace spins and keep the band in tempo.
The tradition of Drum Major at Fresno Christian started last year with Grace Tienken, ‘24, taking on the role. The position is reserved for seniors and is passed on each year. Current Drum Major, Bella Barrett, has been a part of band for 7 years, playing a variety of instruments, including the alto saxophone. Barrett and Jacobs work together to help lead the band.
Bella Barrett, ’27, shares her personal relationship with Chara Jacobs, ’28, and her hope for the future.
“I’ve always been close with Chara, but seeing her step into a leadership role makes me so proud and I’m excited for her journey to come,” Barrett said.
During a band’s performance, the current Drum Major passes the baton to the Assistant Drum Major during their routine, symbolizing a passing of the torch. A salute also occurs showcasing the mutual respect shared between the passer and receiver. Jacobs will be the drum major in the 2026-27 marching season.
Assistant drum major, Chara Jacobs, is excited to take on the new role next school year. Jacobs has participated in FC Band playing the flute and piano since her eighth grade year. Having poured years of dedication into the band program, Jacobs reflects how her experience has impacted her life.
“It’s a really fun place to be. It doesn’t feel like a class. It feels more like a family,” Jacobs said. “And I think with new people coming in, you’re kind of just adopted into our band family.”
The FC Band’s performance on Oct. 24 marked the end of their marching season.
Come out to support them at the Annual Christmas Concert, Dec. 4.
