After a previous trip from her Spanish III class, Beatriz Foth?s Spanish II class will vist Supermercado Vallarta, an authentic Mexican supermarket and restaurant, on Jan. 18. The class will be given an inside look at the market as they walk through the store guided by the general manager, Jaime Romero.
Sydney Carlson, `11, is looking forward to the field trip and believes it will be interesting.
?We are going to learn about Spanish foods and go behind the scenes,? Carlson said. ?I think I will gain knowledge about culture, which will be helpful when I get a job because I will be able to understand Spanish speakers.?
The class will be required to complete a 13-question worksheet, which may be downloaded from the Vault.
?I hope that students get a glimpse of the culture and atmosphere of Central American countries when they enter the diverse supermarket,? Foth said. ?They may wonder ?am I still in the United States?? The manager will explain about fruits, meats and desserts from foreign countries.?
Sarah Barnett, `10, enjoys taking a field trip to a regular day in class because she prefers learning Spanish in a new setting.
?This is a new way to learn Spanish,? Barnett said. ?We will be able to associate what we learn with real life experiences as we take a tour and learn about different types of Spanish foods.?
Additionally, the Spanish II students will attend a lecture by Debbie Siebert, K12 Director of Curriculum and Instruction, as she relays observations from her trip to Puerto Rico in the summer of 2006 on Jan. 17.
?I have never been to Puerto Rico,? Foth said, ?but Siebert will be able to tell us about it firsthand. When someone talks about their experience, you understand better than when you read it from a textbook.?
Nathan Hinojosa, `09, looks forward to the two special events.
?I will gain more knowledge about the different types of food,? Hinojosa said. ?I am excited to hear Debbie Siebert?s lecture because there will be no work during class.?
