New election unfolds legacy

With a new election coming up in November, U.S. citizens will certainly be pondering a very important question: how should George W. Bush be remembered? Will the new president benefit from his two terms or will he be required to clean up after them?

Some feel that his economic policies will not illicit praise. They certainly gain the ire of many respected economists, 400 of which signed a very critical paper in 2003. According to the paper the main intent of Bush?s policies is not the growth of jobs but a ?permanent change in the tax structure. ? However, others say that these cuts stimulate growth.

His foreign policy is also sometimes viewed with skepticism. Critics posit that the ?Bush Doctrine? will ultimately lead to America?s role in world affairs being eclipsed or replaced by a growing power. They point to the nation?s ever-increasing debt and foreign entanglements. Supporters, however, argue that those who believe this scenario overstate the damage Bush caused while understating supposed successes such as the No Child Left Behind Act and the ?troop surge? of 2007.

These topics will be argued over as a new president is inaugurated in January as George W. Bush?s legacy continues to unfold.
