Track wins Fowler Meet

The spring season not only brings new flowers and sunny days but also the largest track team in campus history. Excitement was contagious with campus track members as they won the Fowler Meet against schools such as Riverdale and Caruthers on March 13.

“I think we did good at fowler considering the windy conditions. The kids were very excited because for most it was their first meet,” Ericlee Gilmore, head track coach, said. “We were definitely in the upper half because our teams so large and talented this year.”

While returning members had the same expectations from last year new editions to the team were unsure about what to expect at a meet.

“I had no clue what to expect at the meet,” Danae Cook, ’05, said. “I ran track at my junior high school but this was my first meet with FCS. Our team was pretty nervous because for most of us this was our first meet. I was a little unsure because I hadn’t practiced my events that much.”

While some view track and field as something fun to do in high school, others take it more seriously and plan to pursue it in college.

“My freshman year I am going to be on the track team at Fresno Pacific University,” Nikki Hill, ’02, said. “Its going to be a really great to be a part of that team during college. If it doesn’t work out I can always fall back on choir.”

Others however simply plan to enjoy the sport while in high school.

“I don’t think I will pursue track outside of high school,” Christopher Vanden Hoek, ’03, said. “This is my first year and im really glad I joined but I think it is just something fun to do during high school.”

Other than the large variety of events that players are allowed to choose from the most evident part if track is the positive vibes given out by coaches and members.

“I love the way Gilmore and everybody else is so positive and uplifting,” Michelle Smith, ’04, said. “Other sports are really supportive to but I really see it shine through on the track field.”

While Gilmore remains the head coach a great need for assistance still remains.
“I wish I could do more,” Gilmore, said. “There is so much talent but not enough coaches. I can’t be everywhere at once. Its hard to delegate responsibility because not a lot of people know enough about track.”

Other than the lack of assistant coaches, another lacking area is the amount of equipment available to the team while many practices take place at Buchanan High and Fresno State.

“I think it’s really cool that we get to go to Fresno State and Buchanan to practice,” Ryenn Austin-Brown, ’03, said. ” Since we don’t have a track or a lot of equipment on campus we are lucky that we get to use these places for practice. But it would be really nice if we did have this stuff at our school.”

For more information on the track team please contact Gilmore through the office. The track team next competes at Firebaugh March 20 and at the Fresno Relays on April 4. The Corcoran Meet on March 23 was full so the team will not compete.
