With the game on the line and the pressure on, the girls’ soccer team relied on a junior striker to play most of the positions on the field. While the young team struggled through injuries and inexperience, one player rose to the top of the West Sierra League and was recognized as a top player in the Valley.
Each year The Fresno Bee chooses All-Star teams that consist of talented players from the local high schools in most of the major sports. Included in this year’s girls’ All-Star Soccer Team is Gina Arabia.
“It was very surprising because I didn’t know,” Arabia, ’03, said. “I think it’s awesome because that’s something colleges really look at. I’m really happy about it.”
This year Arabia had 36 goals and 32 assists, and she holds the Fresno Christian scoring record of 100 goals in three years. Teammates and coaches alike respect her.
“Gina set a good example for the team,” Kacie Filgas, ’05, said. “She would always help us out. She was considerate of all of us, and she always treated everyone equally.”
Coach Robert Foshee has only good things to say about Arabia.
“I’m proud of her,” Foshee said. “I think she earned it and she did a good job. I’m glad she was able to be recognized.”
