Employeers need valuable employees

All across the nation teenagers strive to gain independence from their parents. To do this, they take many steps including getting a driver’s license, conforming with their friends and getting a car, but the most used method of achieving this allusive sense of independence is by getting a summer job.

“Having my own job means that I don’t have to rely on my parents as much anymore,” Nick Jones, ’02, said. “Just as important as the independence a job gives is the discipline that you must develop to keep your job.”

The experience gained in a first job serves as a foundation for future jobs and offers a training ground for other employment opportunities.

“A job is a valuable thing for students,” Principal Gary Schultz said. “It teaches responsibility and discipline, and for those who get jobs in areas they could someday pursue, the experience alone is very valuable.”

While gaining experience in any line of work boasts long-term advantages, the short-term benefits also prove valuable.

“Getting money is by far the best part of working,” Lauren Taylor, ’03, said. “The problem most teens get themselves into is expecting to make high wages when they are only able to make low wages.”

While wages vary little from job to job for teenagers, prior work experience and additional skills help to augment their salary in most cases.
