On April 15, tens of thousands of Americans gathered in groups to protest the policies of the new presidential administration. These protests, called ‘tea parties,’ should go down in history as one of the largest peaceful protests in this great nation?s magnificent history.
Yet this will not be the case. The media will try to destroy those of us who gathered peacefully to express our concerns about our ever-growing government. They will portray us to be crazy, right-wing radicals, and this peaceful law-abiding protest will be falsely portrayed as being organized by extremists.
This can be clearly seen in an altercation between a CNN reporter, Susan Roesgen, and a protester. As Roesgen walked through the crowd reading signs for the camera, she approached a protester holding a small child. It was evident that this was not going to bode well when the reporter walked up, clearly mocking the man and his child. Looking at the child, she said, ?Oh, and you’re already in debt, huh??
Halfway through the protestor’s defense, in which he asked how Obama, who has ideals so different from Abraham Lincoln, can honestly compare himself to him, she rudely interrupted him, asking why he was out there. She continued the barrage, asking him if he knew that the stimulus provided a whopping $400 rebate check, and if he knew that Lincoln’s home state received a large amount of bailout money.
Never has there been a reporter yelling at those protesting extreme environmentalism, or a reporter yelling at those protesting the war. But when the reporter goes to the taxation demonstration, the protesters are ?anti-government, anti-CNN and clearly not family viewing.?
What many people may not understand is that those who gathered are simply everyday American citizens who do not like the direction the new administration is taking.
Fresno’s tea party, one of the largest in the state, featured many speakers, including a local business owner, and had over 8,000 in attendance on tax day, April 15.
Keep in mind that in the tea party I attended, as well as in the thousands of others across the country, there were no acts of violence and no one was screaming obscenities into the crowd. I cannot say the same for many of the environmentalist protests and the anti-war protests that occurred during the Bush administration.
Those of us who went to the tax day tea parties went to portray that enough is enough. We are Middle America. We are citizens that are tired of being taxed too much.
We are citizens who believe that unborn children should have the right to life, and that marriage is between a man and a woman. We are citizens that are tired of government working against us instead of for us. And we are citizens that believe that the Constitution should be allowed to work as the founding fathers intended.
