Update: Republican Scott Brown won the race for the Senate seat in Massachusetts after Martha Coakley bowed out, Jan 19. The Democrats no longer have a super majority in the senate.
The year 2010 looks promising. The American people as a whole have one very important biannual event to anticipate: elections.
We as a nation have finally come to grips with the plight that we are in. Our economy is still in shambles. The war is still going on. Taxes and unemployment are rising at an unbelievable rate. This “new era of change” that was guaranteed to come with a new administration turned out to be something quite different from what millions of voters had in mind.
It is safe to say that America, as a whole, was duped in 2008. Carefully scripted yet hollow speeches and ad campaigns won over the hearts of the American people.
A precursor of what is to come in the November elections is clearly evident in the special election taking place in the ultra-liberal state of Massachusetts to fill the seat of the recently deceased Sen. Ted Kennedy (D).
Candidates Martha Coakley (D) and Scott Brown (R) have battled it out in a long campaign for the treasured seat. While some polls show the much loved republican ahead, others show Coakley with a slight advantage.
However, it is not the outcome of this election that matters in the long run. The mere fact that a candidate, who is as conservative as Brown is, can come close to victory in a liberal state like Massachusetts speaks volumes of what is to come.
If the democrats are having this much trouble holding their ground, in the state of Massachusetts nonetheless, then they will most definitely have their hands full in the nationwide elections.
In addition to the long term implications of this election, much is on the line for the Democrats currently. The outcome of the race will determine weather or not the Democrats will be able to keep their 60 member super-majority in the Senate.
This election also provides a large deciding factor for the massive expansion of government that liberals are trying to pass as ‘healthcare overhaul.
One can only hope that this time Americans will make the right decision at the polls and avoid the false catchy campaign ads and hollow promises. We must vote for the candidates who will follow through with their promises and retain their morals, not ones who are simply going to Washington to play the typical game of politics.
