After the completion of three quarters of academics, sports and journalism competitions, The Feather Online will take a one-week hiatus for Easter break, March 29-April 5.
The Feather’s activites will halt alongside all of Fresno Christian, as classes and events will not resume until Tuesday, April 6.
Student activities during spring break range from reading Persuasion, by Jane Austen, for AP Literature, to participating in a Fresno city-wide outreach project, Breakaway.
“I’m excited to go on a missions trip, running a Vacation Bible School at a Hispanic church in Exeter, because I went last year and it was one of the best experiences of my life,” senior Spencer Lee, who serves as The Feather’s sports editor, said. “It’s a great opportunity to take time off of school and bond with other students while serving the community.”
In addition to opportunities for service and exploration, the break signifies a break for The Feather staff.
“When the journalism staff was in New York, and a few of us were here, I felt a lot of pressure, and it was really stressful,” staff photographer Hannah Joseph, ’11, said. “The break came at a good time – when I’m starting to crash. We, as well as most of the students, teachers and administrators need this time to recharge ourselves so we can come back and start fresh.”
Highlights of the second semester so far include Night of the Stars, in which each class showed a well-received film, although the seniors dominated the awards. In addition, the girls’ basketball team was named West Sequoia League Champions, and participated in Division V State playoffs and drama acting out their spring production, The Babbling Brooks.
A recent Fresno Christian Schools auction raised approximately $115,000 for the school, including donations and volunteering given by students. Principal Todd Bennett shaved his head due to breaching the $100,000 mark.
The most recent campus event was Missions Emphasis Week, held March 22-26.
Additionally, the varsity cheer squad placed third in their division at USA Nationals in Anaheim.
Shortly after the break begins, two campus events will follow: the campus California Scholarship Federation (CSF) chapter will host a regional conference, March 27. Sadie Hawkins will be held at Six Flags Magic Mountain, April 16.
The seniors’ high school experience will culminate with the senior trip, May 20-22. The class will travel to Los Angeles to go to Disneyland, Huntington Beach and a murder mystery dinner, among other events. They will graduate in the Peoples Church sanctuary, May 27.
The Feather has competed almost continuously through the school year, securing a Gold Crown from the CSPA. The paper is still judged daily for the NSPA Pacemaker award. They will learn the results of the second competition when the editors travel to Portland, OR, April 14-17.
There will be occasional updates throughout the spring break week, including personal profiles, features and photos. Be sure to return each day to catch up with Feather additions.
