While the school year’s end comprises of many accomplishments and milestones, freshman Katie Barisic reached a unique landmark with her daily comic strip, “The Good Times,” May 20. Barisic’s 150th installment to The Feather Online’s comic strip was published, completing her freshman year with an accomplished goal.
“I never thought I would get to 100th, let alone 150,” Barisic said. “It makes me feel like I can accomplish more than what I’ve already done, and it makes me just want to keep on going because I really like the feeling of accomplishing things.”
On Feb. 24, Barisic posted her 100th comic of “The Good Times.” She follows in the footsteps of previous daily comic artist, senior Daniel Hopper, who illustrated “The Teen Age” his junior year. Having reached his 100th episode, Hopper completed the year of art, then stepped down from the job.
Now, Barisic plans to take the job through her all of high school years.
“As I continue, I plan to keep the same story-line,” Barisic said. “There will be more time over the summer to work, so I’ll have less stress with school and more time to draw. I plan to get very ahead, hopefully by at least two months. Keeping it going will always remind me that I am a pretty good artist and that I’ll always have that throughout my high school years.”
Though creating, drawing and publishing a comic each day may seem daunting, freshman Brandon McCormick claims that this reflects Barisic’s dedication.
“I didn’t know that a person could have so much passion for creative drawing,” McCormick said. “I can’t believe a busy girl like [Barisic] has stuck with it all year.”
Having reached two milestones, Barisic foresees more accomplishments in the future.
“If I reached 150 by now, I could probably reach at least 300 by this time next year,” Barisic said. “I’d probably like to get more than that because I’ll have drawn more than I have this year.”
Over time, Barisic has found her place as The Feather’s featured comic artist. She hopes to take this experience as a step into a future job.
“I feel like I have a really nice place on the school newspaper, and I’m the only person who does what I do on the paper,” Barisic said. “I plan to do art as soon as possible, starting now, as a potential side career. It’s very stress-relieving to always be thinking of new things to paint and draw in art. Drawing has always been a nice time-filler when I’m bored.”
Fans of Barisic’s art, including freshman Jordan Boudreau, enjoys the comics due the similarities between the characters and campus students.
“The comics are great because they poke fun at everyday events and each character is a stereotypical person a lot like someone everyone knows,” Boudreau said. “This makes it fun because I can relate to the characters and laugh at the characters and myself as well.”
These comics have impacted Barisic’s life and give her motivation to pursue more goals.
“Drawing the comics has helped me to see more of the bright side of situations and have a more humorous outlook on life,” Barisic said. “This makes my 150th comic a great personal achievement, and inspires me to continue this challenge.”
