QB leads FC to 2nd straight shutout; Riverdale next

In a blaze of glory, the FC football team has smoked out all the competition. One player, quarterback Sam Fisher, ’03, has dominated the field. Fisher has led the Eagles in every game but his talent especially shone with 166 yards rushing and 190 yards passing in the game against Farmersville on Sept. 13 shutting out the Aztecs, 23-0.

“Sam brings so many weapons to the table and has done a great job navigating our offense,” coach John Hall said. “His ability to run the option and be a serious running threat complements his throwing ability in the passing game.”

Yet Fisher has not been alone in his conquest for victory. With the help of fellow teammates Evan Sanders, ’03, Colby Hunter, ’03, and Michael Van Beek, ’03, and the entire defensive unit, the team has achieved a 3-0 overall record.

“My receivers have been doing an excellent job of running routes,” Fisher said. “They’ve been consistent with their play on the field and everyone is working hard.”

Although these players are the driving force of the team, they realize that only through teamwork will they achieve their goal of winning.

“We have come a long way together as a team,” Sanders said. “Teamwork is a big factor of our success. We have played together a long time, so we have a good team chemistry.”

Most of the defense has played together for two years and prides itself on shutting down opponents and setting up the offense.

“Our team has the fastest defense in our league,” Van Beek said. “No one will be able to beat us with speed. Austin Livingston, (?03) our defensive captain, has come through huge with timely tackles. Our defense gives the offense good field position.”

Adding to his already numerous accomplishments, Fisher is the first athlete from FC to be nominated and win Channel 47’s Player of the Week during Sept. 13-19. Fisher received over 65% of the vote.

“I feel honored to be up for this award,” Fisher said, “but I don’t feel like I should have won. The other candidates have better stats. It feels great to have the support of the school behind me.”

Even with a winning streak, the Eagles realize the importance of keeping a level head as they will next face unbeaten Riverdale.

“Riverdale is a formidable opponent,” Fisher said. “I am confident about the game and we should be able to handle it.”

During its early season success, FC has already beaten Immanuel and Fowler who have consistently beaten the Eagles in the past. During the Farmersville game, the Eagles’ defense only allowed 90 yards against the Aztecs.

The Eagles will next host Riverdale at Clark Stadium on Sept. 20 starting at 5:30 p.m.
