TENNIS DEFEATS NO. 1 TO WIN THIRD CONSECUTIVE VALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP IN UNDEFEATED SEASON

TENNIS WINS WSL TITLE FOR 9TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR!
(Girls’ tennis plays in the West Sierra League. 19-0 overall and 14-0 in the W.S.L. as of Nov. 3)

TENNIS UPDATE, JAN. 25, 2006
Senior Ashley Sherr and junior Jennifer Beckman were named to the All West Sierra League girls’ singles tennis team for the 2005 season. Doubles partners junior Jaclyn Blackwell and sophomore Mary Kneefel were also named to the All West Sierra League team as well.

TEAM TENNIS UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONS
The girls’ tennis team won the CIF Central Section Division V team playoffs as they beat the No. 1 seed, Bakersfield Christian, 8-1, on Nov. 3 at Bakersfield City College.

INDIVIDUAL TENNIS–
Ashley Sherr, who was ranked No. 6 in the California Interscholastic Federation W.S.L. Individual qualifying tournament, lost her round of 16 match to Alex Siemens, 3-6, 6-7 (7-9) of Immanuel High on Nov. 4. She won her first two rounds. Siemens was Immanuel’s No. 1 seed.

FC also placed in the CIF W.S.L. Individual qualifying tournament at Clovis West on Oct. 22, 29. The top four singles and doubles teams from every Central California league (from Divisions 1-5) play to qualify for the CIF Individual Tournament.

In the CIF Individual Tournament on Oct. 29, No. 6 seed, senior Ashley Sherr, had a first round bye and then defeated Jordan Duzi, the No. 1 singles player from Sunnyside High, to advance to the round of 16.

Junior Jennifer Beckman defeated Megan Raphael from Tehachapi High School by a score of 6-1,6-2 to advance to the second round. In the second round she lost to Emily Booker from from Mt. Whitney High, 3-6, 1-6. Booker was seeded No. 12 in the tournament.

In doubles, sophomore Mary Kneefel and junior Jaclyn Blackwell got a bye in the first round because the team they were to play did not show up. In the second round they played the No. 1 seeded team from Bakersfield High and lost 0-6, 0-6.

In qualifying action, Ashley Sherr and Jennifer Beckman both advanced in the CIF Individual Tournament on Oct. 26 as representatives from the WSL. The two finished No. 1 and No. 2 as Sherr defeated Beckman in a best of three final, 6-0, 7-5. Judith Martinez of Firebaugh placed third and Anne Soghomonian of Liberty qualifyed as the No. 4 seed from the WSL. All four girls advance to the Oct. 29 round.

In doubles qualifying for the CIF Individuals, Lauren Wallis and Angie Hernendez of Liberty, Madera Ranchos finished as the No. 1 seed for the WSL as they defeated Jaclyn Blackwell/Mary Kneefel, 7-6 (7-4) and 1-6. Blackwell/Kneefel however qualified for the Oct. 29 tournament by placing No. 2. The team of Noemi Barrera/Jessica Martinez of Firebaugh placed third while Alana Gonzales/Christina Pena of Caruthers finished as the No. 4 seed.

(Girls’ volleyball plays in the West Sierra League. Overall record, 15-2, not including tournaments, and 14-0 in the WSL as of Nov. 9. Tournament record, 8-5)

VOLLEYBALL UPDATE, JAN. 25, 2006–
The volleyball team placed four members on year-end all-star teams in Dec. 2005. Senior Tara Albrechtson was named the West Sierra League MVP (WSL leader in assissts -408, and aces-64); senior Kassy Batesole was named to the first team All WSL ( leader in kills-228, 3rd in blocks-25); junior Christina Cabias was named to the second team All WSL (2nd in league aces-57); and sophomore Melanie Nachtigall was named the WSL underclasswoman of the year (3rd in league kills-119).
