When the children read books, their vital language is developed and social skills are enhanced. On campus, there is a program which is dedicated to helping elementary students develop a passion for reading: Book Buddies.

For this program, buddies will spend their lunch and chapel time reading to students at Pinedale Elementary School every other Thursday. Book Buddies is not an all-year club, instead running from Oct. 7 to Dec. 16.

This year, Book Buddies will continue under new adviser Brenda Warkentin.

“Book Buddies is about ministering to the students of Pinedale Elementary,” Warkentin, office secretary, said. “We travel to the elementary school by bus and read books to the kids. We also want to be a good friend to the little kids.”

Senior Bree Ainley, who participated in the Book Buddies program in previous year, has ambition her third year.

“I joined Book Buddies for the first time two years ago for the purpose of blessing those in need,” Ainley said. “My goal in participating in the Book Buddies program is to help build a foundation in a kindergartner’s life that will help them grow academically and socially.”

Involvement in Book Buddies will enable students to get close with books and children.

“I joined Book Buddies because I love kids,” Sarah Lim, ’14, said. “To get an opportunity to read with them and help out, I think, will be very exciting and fun.”

Linda Amparano, who is coordinator of the club in Pinedale Elementary School, held an instructional Book Buddies meeting on Sept. 23. She planned to have a meeting with students who are interested in volunteering.

?Be committed to come to Book Buddies, because students get bored when they come over to elementary school,? Amparano said. ?High school students are so effective because our elementary students that read with volunteers look up to the high school students as their role models.?
