After notching three dominant shutout wins in a row, the Eagles went into the Sept. 27 game at Clark Intermediate as the favorite to win against struggling Laton. With a 49-2 rout, the Eagles moved to 5-0, alone atop the Central Sierra League standings.

Despite totally dominating the game in the first half after leading 42-0, defensive Coordinator Chris Schultz, while happy about the win, sounded happier the game was over.

“That was a real ugly game for both teams,” Schultz said. “I know it was hard for the players to get up for Laton. As a result it was hard to play with a lot of energy.”

The Eagles offense was seemingly able to move the ball at will, racking up 335 yards of total offense. With running backs Colby Hunter, ’03, and Rene Charest, ’04, running for 93 and 90 yards respectively, the Eagles did not need the services of quarterback Sam Fisher, ’03, for the entire second half.

The Fresno Bee ranked FC football as the #10 Valley team in the Sierra/Sequoia standings on Oct. 3 and the defense is listed 3rd overall in the Valley allowing only an average of 111 yards against per game.

The defense held the Mustangs to 3 first downs and 61 total yards. The defense also scored when Michael Van Beek, ?03, intercepted a pass and ran it back 20 yards for a TD. Special teams also contributed when Brian Casey, ?03, and Aaron Rios, ?03, each picked off a Mustang pass.

Fisher, who had only 5 pass attempts, completed two passes for 58 yards. Both of those completions, however, went for long touchdowns. His first touchdown went to Michael Van Beek, 03′, for 33 yards, and the second to Justin Shanen, 04′, for 25 yards. According to The Bee, FC’s offense is averaging 352 yards per game.

Tyler Wiebe, ’04, played the second half as quarterback and ran for 47 yards himself while mostly giving the ball to his backs.

With their impressive win, the Eagles moved to #4 on the Cal-Hi rankings of Division 5 teams in California.

The Eagles next travel to Cambria to play Coast Union High School on Oct. 4. The school has arranged for several buses to take 250 students to the game. The students also plan on spending the afternoon at Cayucos for a beach diversion.
