CSPA Convention, Day 2 (31 PHOTOS)

Delegates of The Feather staff strolled through a warmer and sunnier New York City to arrive at Columbia University for the second day of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 87th annual Spring National Convention, March 17.

Adviser Greg Stobbe, editor-in-chief Austin Ward, ’11, Webmaster David Casuga, ’12, reviews editor Mary Hierholzer, ’12, and multimedia anchor Brooke Stobbe, ’12, spent the second day at the convention very much like they had the first: attending sessions throughout the morning, working during break periods, getting lunch in Morningside Heights.

However, instead of attending sessions in the afternoon, Greg and Ward presented two 45-minute sessions of their own, one right after the other, in Room 105 of Columbia Law School’s Jerome Greene Hall.

The first presentation, “Make your Online Paper Readable,” discussed techniques for making online articles appear more reader-friendly. The second session, “Success with a Small Staff,” focused on the philosophies and mindsets that small staffs can adopt to achieve success despite their comparatively small size.

An audience of about 40 students and advisers attended each session and asked a number of questions afterward. This is the second time that a student on The Feather staff has been invited to speak at the annual CSPA convention.

Following the convention, the group split up to eat dinner and then reunited at the American Airlines Theatre to see Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. For more information, read Hierholzer’s March 23 review, ‘Earnest’ cast achieves unrivaled performance.

As they were exiting the theater, the delegates spotted and briefly talked to actors Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, who also had been watching the play. The group also ran into Santino Fontana, who portrayed Algernon Moncrieff in the play, and took a photo with him.

The slideshow below contains 31 photos, all with captions, documenting the group’s second day at the convention. Check back tomorrow for another report on the delegates’ experiences.

Maddie, I hope a few bruises resulted from this tackle. You’re a tough cookie.

Haha, thanks Annalise! Even though it got intense out there, I had a blast. Just bummed that I didn’t get to play. I’m the game against you freshman! : p
