There will be three organizations visiting the FC campus, Oct. 4: The Champions for Today, the Hume Lake recreational staff, and the Christian Business Men’s Connection Fresno (CBMC). The three groups will be presenting from 1-3 p.m.
The Champions for Today is an organization with a group of retired National Football League (NFL) football players who travel around America teaching young children and teenagers the importance of self-esteem and social skills. Their main motive for children is for all of them to believe God made a special path and plan for each of them, which they believe makes everyone a unique champion.
Two former NFL players — Shawn Harper and Devin Wyman — will be representing The Champions for Today. They both plan to entertain their audience with physical stunts and to offer the audience Christian advice. One of the feats they perform consist of one football player doing push ups with a teenager of over 120 pounds sitting on their back. In past years, their highlight performance is when they bend metal pans and bars.
The CBMC group consists of Christian businessmen who help other men in the network and meet for devotions and prayers. This group of men will give motives and tips as to how they think a Christian should act in the secular work place.
Also on the North Field will be physical activities hosted by the Hume Lake recreational team. They plan to bring a rock wall, mechanical bull and inflatable barriers. There will also be the opportunity for FC students to participate in a competition of frisbee tag.
Principal Todd Bennett expects students to take these events as an opportunity for attendees to learn how to branch out into the community.
“It’s difficult to decide as to which activity to look forward to the most,” Bennett said. “Each one has an impact to further the spread of faith and Christianity towards the community.”
Although The Champions for Today have visited FC annually for the past two years, junior Briana Graff believes the presentation will be entertaining, especially for those who have yet to see it.
“I’m very excited,” Graff said. “Even though I’ve seen The Champions for Today before, I always find it amusing to watch what they do — it’s pretty cool to see someone bend a skillet like a taco. I think it will be incredibly awesome, especially to those who haven’t seen them do this before.”
In order to fit everything in, classes will be on a half-day schedule without an eight period class. All students will be released at 11:30 a.m. to attend a meal consisting of hamburgers, chips, fruit salad, cookies and various beverages in the FC Gym. Though it is hosted on the FC campus, everyone in the Fresno County community is invited to attend.
