Camp-like activities bring Valley students together

Christian athletes gathered together from across the San Joaquin Valley to participate in the fifth annual FCA Huddle Olympics. A hundred and fifty students in 28 teams from 12 different schools attended and competed for a prize over $300.

“It was a great idea to bring schools together,” Ericlee Gilmore, FCA director, said. “It was a great ministry for non-Christian athletes.”

Egg toss and push-a-suburban were two of the Olympic games participants played. The games mostly consisted of field day and camp-like activities.

“I was expecting the games to be silly,” Jon Steele, ’03, said. “I liked the camp games, they were really fun.”

Sanger won the event and a $365 scholarship that will be applied towards next year’s FCA Huddle camp. East Union from Manteca placed second while Delano High took third.

“I think the scholarship was a good way to get students incorporated with FCA,” Carli Albrechtson, ’03, said. “It was a way for Christians and non-Christians to unite together.”

Seniors Brain Casey, Albrechtson, and Steele competed as a team to represent Fresno Christian.

“I felt like I was going to the real Olympics,” Casey, said. “I entered the Olympics partly because I just wanted to wear spandex.”

The Huddle Olympics began when Joe Broussard, FCA head director, had an idea to bring together high schools across the Valley.

This year the FCA Huddle Olympics was held at Fresno Pacific University on Oct.10 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. The cost was $75 each team and $15 per person. The cost included the entry fee, meals and activities.
