?Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it,? Albert Einstein said. People obtain wisdom over the years from mentors and life experience.
Sister To Sister is a program where junior high school girls are mentored by upperclassmen girls, who act as their “older sister.” The girls get a chance to acquire the wisdom that their older sister has gained throughout their lifetime.
Junior high school teacher Hallie Rojeski took over Sister To Sister this year. She picked up the program because she wanted this year’s junior high school girls to experience what so many others have before them.
“I know there are a lot of junior high girls excited about being guided and mentored by a junior or senior,” Rojeski said. “It gives the older sisters an opportunity to serve the school and the younger girls.”
Rojeski is very confident in the success of this program. One of the purposes of Sister To Sister is to develop a friendship and relationship that will be beneficial to both young women.
“I hope it will help the younger girls in their walk with the Lord and help them build more confidence in themselves,” Rojeski said.
Senior Victoria Hindes is very enthusiastic about this year’s program. She was an older sister last year and enjoyed the relationship she made with her younger sister.
“My favorite part was being a model for the younger girl because I remember when I was in their situation and wanted someone to look up to,” Hindes said.
Hindes encourages upperclassmen girls to be a part of this program. It’s a great chance to focus on somebody else and help them out with their problems, she says.
“Junior and senior girls should definitely get involved,” Hindes said. “It gives them an opportunity to counsel to a junior high girl and let them know they are not alone.”
Eighth grade student Kiaya Hargis is very eager for this year’s Sister To Sister program to start up again as she thinks that the program gives younger girls a chance to get some advice from their elders.
“I’m looking forward to talking to my sister and learning more about her,” Hargis said. “I joined Sister To Sister last year and it was a great experience.”
Hargis is excited to meet up with her new older sister and see what advice she has for her.
“It’s nice to meet some of the high school girls and be mentored by them,” Hargis said. “Being able to go out to lunch and spend quality time with my sister was a great oppurtunity to meet a junior or senior without it being intimidating.”
Applications for Sister To Sister are available in Room 608 and due by Sept. 6. The first meeting convenes in Room 608 on Sept. 8. The sisters will be paired up by the first meeting.
The older sisters are required to meet with the sponsor of the program during lunch once a month for review and training. The guidelines for discussion topics will be given by the sponsor.
The discussions between the older and younger sisters remain private and are not to be discussed with anyone else except the sponsor, if needed.
