For the past 13 years, the FC has put on a cheer clinic for grades K-12, teaching the basics of cheerleading and to capture girls’ interest in the activity. This year the clinic will be hosted in the Peoples Church Gym, Oct. 25-27.
Annette Phillips who is the varsity cheer coach decided to put on the camp as coaching cheer has been dedicated to the sport for the past 20 years. This year she hopes to see a more broad outcome.
“I have done this my whole life,” Phillips said. “It has always been a passion of mine. This year the clinic is encouraging males to participate. Guys have always been allowed but this year they are really expecting males to participate.”
Many girls have participated in the clinic since they were in kindergarten, including freshman Callista Fries, who is now a part of the varsity cheer and will help out at the event.
“I have done this ever since I was a young girl,” Fries said. “I just want to support the school, and help out the younger girls. The clinic has made me excel in my passion and I hope it inspires other young girls. Our cheers are for God and the school.”
Third grade student Megan Grimmius is one of the many young children joining the clinic who expresses her enthusiasm to engage in the event.
“I am very excited to join the clinic because I just love to be loud and expres my joy for the school,” Grimmius said. “I have never done this before but I am very excited.”
One of the highlights of the clinic is the chance for elementary students to cheer at a high school varsity football game against Parlier, Oct. 28.
The clinic costs $45 and includes two days of cheer, a rhinestone spirit shirt and a hair bow.
Varsity cheer will next travel to San Francisco to cheer in front of around 70,000 people where the 49ers will take on the Browns, Oct. 30.
