In observation of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of one of the bloodiest conflicts in the nation’s history, The American Civil War Society held the Civil War Revisited, Oct. 22-23. As one of the largest reenactments in the nation, hundreds of people visited Kearney Park in order to participate in the event, which relived battles and scenes of the era.
The gathering featured skirmishes such as The First Battle Bull Run, among others. A historically-accurate presentation of both Confederate and Union camps were available for observation, as well as camp hospitals and town meetings. The characters ranged in age from young children to adults, and dressed in costume, living a life similar to that of the era.
The event allowed spectators to witness the configurations of the battle field, camp life and wardrobe of the soldiers. It also features historical figures ranging from Sojourner Truth to Abraham Lincoln.
Social science teacher Jordana Siebert encouraged all her students to attend the event by offering 20 points of extra credit for those who interviewed a participant and wrote a one page response.
