LETTER: Courageous better than subpar

Dear editor:

Thanks Ryan for writing a good article on https://archive.thefeather.com/index.php?page=articles&id=57280Courageous! You did a great job describing the film and giving a feel of what it is about). One paragraph I wanted highlight was the following:

“Though to most viewers, Courageous would seem like a sub-par movie, the filmmakers worked their best with the resources provided for them. They created a highly enjoyable film despite lacking the high quality graphics and high-tech special effects of normal secular movies.”

I think many movie goers will think it was an above par movie. It was in the top ten nationwide for many weeks.

Also, I think the more people go to movies with a positive message, the more Hollywood will spend money to make them (only 2 million was spent on Courageous). Christians spend billions of dollars on movies with poor morality and negative messages. We shouldn’t be surprised that more of those movies get made (and with bigger budgets) than films with a positive message (not just evangelistic ones).

Films with great faith messages aren’t new to Hollywood (see Chariots of Fire, Amazing Grace, Ben Hur, The Robe, etc. . .), but Hollywood makes and spends money on what brings in the dollars. It’s our responsibility as believers to spend our money wisely on films because it sends a message on what films to make.
