Christmas Tree Lane Walk (VIDEO)

This year marks the 89th annual Christmas Tree Lane, which is sponsored through the Fig Garden Homeowners Association Dec. 3-25. The lane is located on Van Ness Boulevard spanning from Shields to Shaw avenues.

Christmas Tree Lane began in 1920 with the decoration of a single tree in the memory of a child who had died. Since then, every year the lane has been on except in 1941 due to wartime restrictions and in 1973 during an energy crisis.

Senior Daniel Andrew expresses how Christmas Tree Lane is enjoyable, especially when walking with friends.

“It was my first time walking the lane and I thought that Christmas Tree Lane was great,” Andrew said. “Seeing all the lights on the houses, hanging out with friends and seeing everyone look cheerful made the night even better.”

Christmas Tree Lane residence, junior Katie Barisic, says that searching for reindeer is a lot of fun and presents a great activity for friends.

“You can always search for Santa’s reindeer,” Barisic said. “Starting with Dasher they are placed throughout the lane so that at the very end you find Rudolph; Comet is the one in front of my house. I’d say bring lots of friends then you can snuggle together when it’s freezing cold and admire the displays people put up. Always donate to the cause, without donations the lane wouldn’t be.”

The lane is open Sun.-Thurs., 6 p.m.-10 p.m and Fri.-Sat., 6 p.m.-11 p.m. During these times, traffic is northbound except during walk nights, Dec. 3 and Dec. 13.

This day was a great day to grow closer to God and meet new people. I appreciate Hume Lake coming up and providing us with food and fun. Devon Wyman really made me think about life and how there are two halves, and do not look back on your past but look ahead to your future!
