No one knows what the future will hold, which can be very nerve-wracking, especially for those whose futures seem so close. That’s why, in order to better prepare the students of FC there will be a Career Day held from 12:30-3 p.m. in Ground Zero, March 28. The event is mandatory for all students in 7-12 grade. Additionally, there will be an academic assignment given by junior high and high school English teachers.
The event will hold three different sessions with the opportunity for students to choose from a series of four different speakers each session. These groups will be separated by similar professions, including fields such as medical, business and government, among others.
One of the speakers at Career Day is alumna, Olyvia Franklin, ’10, who hopes to encourage students to branch out and see what careers are out there for them. Franklin believes focusing on academics in high school is very important because it builds up a person’s choices for to the future.
“I think it’s good for high school students to plan out their future,” Franklin said. “It puts them in a position to keep their motivation to follow their dreams. It is very important to stay focused throughout high school and take advantage of every opportunity you have because maybe you will get a job that requires you to know more than one subject.”
Assistant Academic Adviser Michelle Warkentin cares deeply about the Career Day and what it can offer students. Warkentin believes the exhibition presents a great opportunity for students to be exposed to a variety of career paths, not just ones they consider easy or have experienced growing up.
“This event will be beneficial to students of all ages,” Warkentin said. “It is never too early to start thinking about a future career path. It will be a great chance to learn specific details about each career, such as the salary range, educational requirements and characteristics useful for each job.”
Another guest speaker, alumnus J. Scott Leonard, ’71, who is the President and CEO of Guarantee Real Estate, is enthusiastic to share any information about his business and ministry. Leonard believes God uses different people in a variety of professions for certain reasons.
“God can use us in all different types of professions,” Leonard said. “Seeking God’s direction in planning your personal career choice is a big part of your future, I believe. Even though our priorities and choices change from time to time, it is a wise practice to plan one’s future, although provide for flexibility as God changes our paths.”
Warkentin hopes this event will be a great success among the students. She hopes to make this an annual occasion with a College Fair in the fall and a Career Day in the spring.
“This will most definitely become an annual event,” Warkentin said. “Career Day is a time for students to learn about interesting careers from FC alumni who are professionals in our community. These events are helping the FC students prepare for their future no matter what profession they choose.”
