GIRLS’ SOFTBALL, 2011-12

The Eagles played against the Orange Cove Titans for their seventh non-league game on the season, March 27.

After losing the first six games, the Eagles were desperate for a win. To start off the game, FC had an opportunity to bat first and took full advantage, earning in 6 runs.

During the fourth inning, the bases were loaded as junior Jenna Orcutt stepped up to the plate. Due to good pitching, Orcutt hit a grand slam to bring everyone home, and thus further increased the Eagles lead.

The Titans had no answer for Orcutt’s grand slam, and due to sophomore Jenna Weimer’s pitching the inning was over in three outs.

Senior Dana King says that containing positive attitude and remaining calm is a crucial part of softball. It is also important to play as a team rather than individuals.

“The past games seem slow and awkward,” King said. “Not because we were losing but it tended to be a game between the catcher and pitcher and no one else. It went by slow and the other team would always steal. But today?s game, Jenna Weimer was super positive and ready to play and was having fun on the mound which changed everyone else?s mood.”

King commends Orcutt for her hard work and bringing everyone home.

“The final offensive confidence booster was when Jenna Orcutt got her grand slam and brought everyone home,” King said. “The whole team ran on the filed and was cheering for her as she jogged to home plate; it was great.”

Senior Nicole Hensley says that after losing several games earlier in the season, it was rewarding to beat Orange Cove.

“Winning the first game was really fun,” Hensley said. “It definitely has given us a confidence booster going into our next games. I am proud of the whole team and especially Ashley Garcia because she did a great job playing catcher for the first time. The highlight of the game was Jenna Orcutt hitting a grand slam.”

Freshman Gaby Siquieros says that the team overcame many obstacles since the beginning of the season; but overcame them by working hard.

“This season has been rough,” Siquieros said. “With several players dropping out due to various reasons, it?s been hard to adjust and practice. But we still practiced everyday and played our hearts out for the past few games. So I think we deserved to win this game.”

The Eagles will next play against Kings Christian High School on March 29.
