GIRLS’ SOFTBALL, 2011-12

Although FC has encountered Fowler during pre-season, this is the first time the two teams meet during league play, April 19. After losing to Caruthers High School earlier in the week, FC’s coaching staff increased the intensity level of practices in order to prepare the players for the game. However, the Redcats, who only lost one game throughout the season were not willing to accommodate.

The Redcats? pitcher pitched at a high pace, which prevented the Eagles from being successful at the plate. FC ultimately lost to Fowler, 18-2.

According to sophomore pitcher Jenna Weimer, she plans on pushing the team forward even when they are losing. Since her role as a pitcher reflects the team tremendously, she plans on demonstrating positive attitude for the rest of her teammates.

“I need to bring the level of intensity and focus down to a healthy, realistic level,” Weimer said. “Right now, I am so focused on striking people out or fielding people out that I am oblivious to my facial expressions and demeanor. The team feeds off of the pitcher; if the pitcher is relaxed, the team is relaxed. If the pitcher is nervous, so will the rest of the team.”

Senior Dana King says that she was disappointed with the loss. King believes that the team has potential to win games if they come out with willingness to win.

“I am upset about the game,” King said. “I think we are a good team and we had a potential to beat this team, but we don?t play hard from the beginning. We often play sloppy in the first few innings and then try to come back towards the end of the game. We need to realize that we have to come out strong from the start and keep it up until the end of the game.”

Despite losing, freshman Gaby Siqueiros is satisfied that the team had an opportunity to play against a team with higher level and experience. Siqueiros believes that if the team does not repeat the same mistakes, they will be able to defeat future opponents.

“Today?s game was a good experience,” Siqueiros said. “Even though we lost, we learned a lot of things and we can improve by not making the same mistakes again. Also, we should practice catching and throwing because even though it?s an easy thing to do. We tend to mess up and it hurts during games.”

The Eagles will next host the Parlier Panthers, April 23.
