Softball sport shorts: FC triumphs over Tranquillity in double-header

(Scrimmages do not count toward win/loss record. Visit the Sports Section for girls’ softball features. For a simple overview of scores and upcoming games, check the Spring sport box scores, 2012 for dates, opponents and times for all Eagle sports.)

Be sure to visit the 2011-12 girls’ softball schedule, home page, or check out Maxpreps.com. The Eagles are currently 4-11 overall and 0-5 in the West Sequoia League as of May 4. The Eagles will next play against Caruthers Blue Raiders, May 3.

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL, 2011-12

Due to a previous rain out, the Eagles hosted the Tranquillity Tigers for a double-header to make-up the lost game, April 30. In the first game, sophomore pitcher Jenna Weimer started the game and prevented the Tigers from being successful at the plate. Tigers were able to make connections with the ball a few times, but the Eagles still came out victorious, 18-6.

Just like the first game, pitching in the second match is just as important and is a critical part of winning. Due to slow pitching by the Tigers, FC was able to hit. However, when FC was on defense, senior Nicole Hensley was ready to accommodate, switching between fast and slow pitch, which prevented the Tigers from hitting and scoring. Due to the Tigers? inability to hit, the Eagles were able to defeat Tranquilly, 11-3.

According to sophomore Illeana See, she is satisfied with the win and believes that the team was able to defeat the Tigers due to their dedication to get through hard times.

“I am glad that we won this game,” See said. “We worked really hard at practices and we were willing to work together as a team. Winning the game was a good confidence booster and I believe that we will win more games throughout the season. We just need to trust ourselves and not give up even when we are not doing so well.”

Hensley agrees with See and says that she is glad with the victories and that the team needs to stay aggressive at all times, especially at bat.

“I feel really good that our hard work paid off,” Hensley said. “Since we worked so hard, we were able to beat them twice. We can keep being aggressive when we are hitting, especially when we face a pitcher that is more slow; that is when we should really hit the ball and hit it hard. We can also keep working on our defense, such as reducing our errors and making the basic plays.”

Freshman Ashley Garcia commends Hensley and Weimer for collaborating together at pitching.

“We did a great job against Tranquillity,” Garcia said. “Our pitchers, Nicole and Jenna did an amazing job. Jenna started the game, but Nicole was helping her throughout the game and they were just working together until the end. Besides the pitchers, I am proud of every single player. We made some minor mistakes but it happens in every level of softball so I am content.”

The Eagles will next host the Caruthers Blue Raiders for senior night on May 3.
