Journalism to attend NYC, Columbia University

While the journalism class writes daily articles, solicits ads, and creates a hard-copy paper every month, many students are unaware of the online edition. And in an effort to enhance reporters’ abilities, adviser Greg Stobbe plans to lead the class to New York City in March.

In hopes of exposing the students to arguably one of the strongest journalism programs in the country, Stobbe believes that a trip to a journalism conference will help them to become more proficient writers and competent journalists.

“Being that this is my first year in journalism,” Beth Yanez, ’03, said, “I am really excited about the trip. Wherever I go to college, I plan to minor in journalism, so visiting Columbia University will be a great start.”

Columbia University is hosting its 78th annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association on Mar. 19-21. Over 25 seminars will be presented and the students will be able to view hundreds of award-winning publications. Hundreds of other students from around the country will share their newspaper stories and ideas with the FC staff.

“Two years ago, Molly Sargent (yearbook adviser) and I took two students to this same conference,” Stobbe said. “The experience not only opened up their eyes to media and journalistic opportunities, it also expanded my vision for journalism on campus.”

Conference seminars include: Right under your nose-stories and photos school newspapers miss, Features that touch readers, Fighting for press rights, Thinking like an editor, Modern in-depth reporting, and many more.

“Journalism is a great English experience, and Mr. Stobbe is the coolest teacher at school,” Ryan Zuercher, ’04, said. “I’m looking forward to the New York trip, and I hope to gain writing knowledge and travel experience.”

In addition to the conference, Stobbe had added three days of exploring and experiencing some of what New York has to offer. The class will be attending a Broadway musical and will see Times Square, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and other Manhattan sites.

The cost for the six-day trip will approximately be $810 plus food and incidentals. If students are interested in traveling with the group, Stobbe has a cost break-down available. Students who are planning on joining journalism next year are encouraged to attend.

This will be Stobbe’s 10th student educational tour over the last eight years and is also leading a group on a 17-day tour Switzerland and Germany in June. Seats are also available for that trip as well. Refer to the online article, “Swiss educational trip planned”, in this paper for more information.
