The Eagles traveled to Watsonville High School to play the Wildcatz, Oct. 19. FC forfeited the game at halftime out of safety for the team. The Eagles sustained injuries to vital players, leaving the team with a roster unsafe for play, so the game ended with the score of 36-7 at halftime.
Senior JP Caprioglio feels that the level of roughness caused the event to be less of a football game and more of a fight.
“After the first 15 minutes it wasn’t even football anymore,” Caprioglio said. “The refs just let the game get out of hand in the second half and it showed on the field. Obviously Caleb [Nale] got hurt, and pretty soon it was just headhunting, not playing. It just wasn’t fun, it was a big fight. Really that was the only option we had, the way things were progressing.”
The skirmish was very evenly matched for the first quarter, the Eagles finishing those initial 15 minutes losing, 7-0. Junior linebacker Bobby Christopher thinks that the physical play represented the officiating.
“Well the refs let it get out of hand. Players were cheap-shotting, making illegal hits, and it really showed in the injuries we had and how the game went,” Christopher said. “It’s hard to play a football game when all we can do is try not to get hurt and protect ourselves. It’s not a matter of toughness, it’s simply a matter of playing legally or not.”
