Some people spend Halloween trick-or-treating and others use the night for church outreach functions. Though many people do not actually celebrate the pagan traditions of Halloween, the night instead brings forth an evening of entertaining activities. Whatever the events that occur, students and families alike can enjoy time spent together.
In order to get ready for the harvest festivities, The Feather has collected a number of different Halloween experiences from students. During the next two days, more stories will be published.
Along with these anecdotes, The Feather staff encourages readers to email their own stories to The Feather Online until the day after Halloween.
Pumpkin patch and lost shoe
Matthew Weimer
November 1, 2012
As a kid I always loved going to pick out a pumpkin at one of the local patches. Once my younger sister, Marianne (FCS graduate in 1990), lost her shoe. We searched all over that patch; I finally found it for her.

I don’t really like dressing up in princess costumes or as a cowboy, or things like that. For our church Halloween alternative, I try to dress up a something unconventional. Last year, I was a cat up a tree and next year I plan to be a barrel of monkeys. Most people didn’t get the joke last year, but maybe next year . . .

Every year I do something different for Halloween. In the past I’ve gone to church gatherings, watched scary movies or just spent quite time with my family. This year I’m going trick- or- treating with some friends.

My family doesn’t celebrate Halloween, so we usually go out so we don’t have to bother with trick-or-treaters. We usually do something fun as a family, like going out to dinner or a movie. One year we even went to Disneyland. It’s fun to bond with my family more each year.

Usually I go to my church and help out with our church event. This year it is called the Superhero Spectacular. They have food, games, bounce houses for the kids and they give candy out for all the games. Last year, they had an iPad drawing and this year they have another drawing for an iPad.

Our church normally puts on a carnival and I help work a booth. We haven’t done it in a while but we’re restarting it this year. I went as a kid and now I’m working at it as a high schooler.

October 30, 2012
Me and my family carve pumpkins the day before Halloween. Then we all take pictures in our costumes before going trick-or-treatiing, and after we’re done going to houses, we go home and sort through all the candy.

We use to set up about a hundred glass houses all in the shape of a village so it looked like a halloween town but we don’t do that anymore because there’s no time to set it up; it takes about a month to set everything up, so now we just pass out candy.

With my church [College Community Mennonite Brethren ], we dress up and meet at our church. As a youth group, we go trick-or-treating for canned food and then we gather it all out and take it to homeless shelters. I think its’ cool to put good into a holiday that’s not so great. It’s all the scary things, and we’re actually going out to help other people.

For halloween my family usually gets together at my cousin’s house and go trick-or-treating with our family. But now everyone is in college or high school, except for my little cousin Alex, so now we just do whatever.

I don’t have any halloween traditions. I’m just staying home to watch a movie and hand out candy to people. I used to go trick-or-treating with my neighbor but we haven’t done that in years.

For halloween I’m going trick-or-treating with Ivette Ibarra. For the past four years I’ve gone over to my grandparents house because they live close to Ivette and then later head over to her house to spend the rest of the night with her.

I’m not doing anything for halloween this year. I used to go trick-or-treating with friends but this year I’m just staying home. I guess I’ll just be handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters.
