Eagles end tourney winless, grow as team–Dec. 22
The FC Eagles played in the five day Dinuba Tournament stretching from Dec. 18-22. The Eagles played four games over those five days, but came up short, going 0-4 and placing 12th in the tournament.
On the first day of the Tournament, FC played the Division II Huskies of Hanford West High School. The Eagles hung with the Huskies early on, until Hanford’s run at the end of the first quarter pulled them out in front. The Huskies never looked back. Hanford West used their speed and strong defense to win easily, 91-20.
After a day of rest, the Eagles returned to the floor to take on the Pirates of Reedley High School. The Eagles faced foul trouble early and seniors Brandon McCormick and Jordan Boudreau had trouble getting into their respective grooves. The Reedley Pirates won the contest, 57-40.
The Eagles played the Sierra High School Chieftains, Dec. 21. The game started slowly for the Eagles, as they found it hard to beat the Chieftains press, and found themselves down early. With Sierra’s strong outside shoting, it was near impossible for the Eagles to come back. Sierra won comfortably, 82-42.
Going into the final day of the tournament, FC found themselves fighting for eleventh place, but more importantly, trying to snap a three-game losing streak. FC faced the Orange Cove High School Titans. The game was tight at the half, Eagles 24, Titans 28. However, in the third quarter, Orange Cove got hot and pulled away. Orange Cove shot over 40% fom beyond the 3 point line and won by twenty points. The Titans’ Ronny Arias lead the team in scoring and finished with 37 points.
Assistant Coach Clifton Jackson says that he believes the team is better then they have been playing, and believes they can get to where they were last year.
“This tournament wasn’t very strong for us,” Jackson said. “We learned a lot about oursleves, and with the team continuing to grow together, we will only get better.”
Senior Matt Howard, playing in his first games of the season, says that the team played hard, they just came up short in the long run.
“We have a lot of young players and we played hard,” Howard said. “The results we wanted seemed to evade us but we’re getting better and that’s what matters. We just need to work on ball movement and shot seletion, maybe some ball skills, and we’ll be fine.”
The Eagle’s next game will be on Thurs. Jan. 3 at Tranquillity High School.
