Eagles defend home court, capture third straight victory–Jan. 8

The Fresno Christian boys basketball team played their first home game against theFirebaugh Eagles on Tuesday, Jan. 8. FC was looking to extend their winning streak to three games with a win at home.

The game was close throughout, with neither team able to pull away. The Eagles got in foul trouble early, with three of their five starters having three fouls at halftime. This put the pressure on the bench. Entering the third quarter, the Eagles held a five point advantage. The bench had to step it up in the third, however Firebaugh closed the gap and tied the game as the game entered the fourth and final quarter.

With the starters back in the game, FC planned in easily re-taking the lead. However, Firebaugh carried their momentum over into the fourth and started the quarter on a 7-0 run, putting the score to 38-45. After an FC timeout, the team regrouped and started chipping away at the lead. The Eagles finally pulled away in the final two minutes of the game, hitting clutch free-throws and playing tight defense during a 22-10 run to seal the game the game, 60-55.

The Fresno Christian Eagles were lead by seniors Matt Howard (18 points) and Jordan Boudreau (10), with Brandon McCormick (9) and Sophomore Trevor Beal (9), who also made key contributions.

Meanwhile, Firebaugh’s scoring came from Juan Tores (11), Francisco Cuevas (10), and brothers Josh Allen (9) and Jason Allen (8).

Freshman Jon Anguiano says that he is amazed at how the team has performed lately, but he knows they can’t get overconfident.

“We’ve been doing great,” Anguiano said. “Ever since we got all our players, we haven’t lost. but we have a big game at Sierra this week, who we already lost to earlier in the season, but with the way we’ve been playing, I think it will be a much better game, and I definitely think we can come away with a win.”

The Eagles next game will be on Jan. 10 as FC travels to Sierra High School to take on the Chieftains.
