Girls' soccer sport shorts: Caruthers

GIRLS’ SOCCER SPORT SHORTS, 2012-13–
(Scrimmages do not count toward win/loss record. Visit the Sports Section for girls’ soccer features). For a simple overview of scores and upcoming games, check the Winter sport box scores, 2012-13, for dates, opponents and times for all Eagle sports.

Be sure to visit the 2012-13 girls’ soccer schedule, home page, or check out Maxpreps.com. FC is currently 2-2 in the West Sequoia League and 6-5-1 overall as of Jan. 18. The Eagles will next host the Riverdale Cowboys, Jan. 23.

EAGLES LOSE SLIM GAME TO BLUE RAIDERS–0-1
With two victories under their belt, the Eagles prepared to face the undefeated Caruthers Blue Raiders at their home field, Jan. 15. Despite the hard battle fought by both teams, the Blue Raiders were able to put one goal in, giving them their 1-0 win.

During the first half, the Blue Raiders were able to put one goal in the net by junior Amanda Hinojosa, assisted by sophomore Yazmin Aguirre. After this goal, FC shut down Caruther’s offense, not allowing them to score for the rest of the game. Although FC tried attack the Blue Raider’s box, they were unable to finish, which resulted in their 0-1 loss.

Despite the loss, head coach Tony Martinez believes the girls gave their best effort throughout the game and played with confidence, displaying their ability to play anyone.

“The girls were excited and ready to play,” Martinez said. “They knew they had to play the best game of the year and they did. We played hard the whole game and it showed. Although we didn’t win, I think it was a victory for confidence and a team showing that we can play with anyone.”

According to defensive player Jenna Weimer, ’14, she thought that the team had many opportunities to score but was unable to follow through.

“I think our team had a lot of opportunities to score but we never really finished them,” Weimer said. “We got the ball up to their end of the field and did what we could; it was just a matter of learning how to finish what we start.”

Though Weimer believes the team made some minor mistakes, she also thought everyone played with passion and left it all on the field.

“Our defense had some mistakes and so did our offense,” Weimer said. “We had some great breakaways where we would get up to their side of the field and it would maybe just be a cut to throw the defender off and get the ball in. It was just little things that kept us from winning the game. But I felt like we played our hearts out and left it all out on the field, and if we keep getting the ball up there we’ll eventually get it into their goal.”

As one of the three team captains, junior Tynin Fries believes the Eagles played their best game of the season, showing great aggressiveness and will to win.

“I thought we played really well as a team,” Fries said. “Offensively, we played a great game with a lot of passing. We were agressive and had a lot of good runs. Defense did a great job of shutting down their offense. All together, the team played our best game yet. Even though we didn’t win that game, I felt proud of how we played.”
