FC TRAVELS TO FOWLER, REDCATS DEFEAT EAGLES–2-4

After beating the Fowler Redcats on their home turf, Jan. 11, the Lady Eagles traveled to face the Redcats for a second time, with the hope of gaining another win, Jan. 29. Despite the Eagles’ effort, the team fell, 4-2.

Within the first seven minutes of the game, Fowler put their first goal into the net, and continued to drive past the Eagles in the first half, scoring three more goals and finishing the first 4-0 over FC.

According to head coach Tony Martinez, the team was unable to start with a strong focus, which affected the play in the game. Despite the slow start, Martinez also believes the girls were able to come back more in the second half.

“We started slow again,” Martinez said. “We were behind four goals before we started to get into the game. After we got ourselves focused, we shut them down, kept them from scoring anymore, actually out playing them for the last thirty minutes. I think we are back on track, but still need to improve on finishing to score.”

Due to a a rough start, senior Meredith Monke found herself frustrated with the knowledge that her team had the potential to play hard but was unable to muster up more competition in the first half.

“I thought we didn’t play our best during the first half of the game which made me kind of frustrated,” Monke said. “I felt disappointed when the other team kept scoring.”

Despite being scored on four times in the first half, Monke believes the team came out with much more determination and the will to win in the second. According to Monke, seeing the team come back harder in the second gives her hope for the team to come out more focused in the next game.

“We definitely came out stronger in the second half and put up a good fight,” Monke said. “I hope we come out to our next game focused and ready to win so that we start the game strong!”

In the second half, senior Maddie Yee was able to score a header off of Monke’s corner kick, and freshman Courtney Messer added to the Eagle’s score on a run through the middle. After a tough fight, the Eagle’s lost to the Redcats, 4-2.
