Eagles defeated in tough match by Mustangs–56-45, Feb. 5
After coming off of three straight wins, the Eagles hosted the Minarets Mustangs, Feb. 5. FC was looking to continue their streak in the second half of the season with the pursuit for a playoff berth.
The game was fast and high-scoring in the first. Minaret’s point guard, senior Austin Pimentel, had 10 of the teams 13 first quarter points, including two three-pointers. However, FC hit a few threes and established an inside presence, holding the lead 18-13 at the end of the first. In the second, the scoring died down, as both teams settled down defensively and the half ended with the Eagles up by five, 25-20.
In the third, FC struggled offensively and turned the ball over. Minarets went on a 15-3 run to open the quarter and put FC down, forcing them to claw their way back. At the end of the third, the Mustangs lead 39-33. In the fourth, Fresno Christian struggle to fight back, but Minarets continued their tight defense and lights out shooting. After a few late-game free throws, the Mustangs sealed the victory with a 56-45 win over the Eagles.
The Eagles scoring was produced by Seniors Matt Howard (18) and Jordan Boudreau (10). For Minarets, junior Conly Biglione (14), and Pimentel, who lead all scores with 23.
Senior captain Brandon McCormick says that the Eagles should have won the game, but due to multiple turnovers, they were unable to secure a victory.
“We had too many turnovers,” McCormick said. “We needed to make better passes and be stronger with the ball. We were lazy with or passes and settled for bad shots. We rebounded better than the first time we played them, but in order to win, we need to play better in all aspects of the game.”
With the loss, the Eagles fall to fourth in West Sequoia League (WSL) standings, with a 3-4 record and 9-13 overall.
The Eagles will next travel to Riverdale, where they will take on the Riverdale Cowboys, Feb. 8.
